In the late 1960’s, Jim Newlin, then fulltime personnel manager at the Sears mail order warehouse, started a backyard nursery. While handling these dual roles, he was also a husband to his wife Pat and a father to his two sons and daughter. In 1977 Morris, his oldest son, started a full-time landscaping and maintenance business from his home on New Garden Road , hence the company name.
Jim retired from Sears in 1979 and went to work with Morris and Pat to start a retail nursery on Highway 220 in Summerfield , N.C. In 1984, the Newlins opened a seasonal open-air retail location on Battleground Avenue operating out of a Gazebo (again, explains the name, New Garden Nursery Gazebo). Two years later the Gazebo began operating year-round. In 1992 the Summerfield location relocated to a new site on Old Oak Ridge Road that served as a retail location and operations base for the landscape and maintenance segments of the business.
In June of 1992, Jim Newlin passed away leaving behind a passion for plants and a deep belief in the importance of customer service. In the years that followed, New Garden saw a great deal of growth and construction culminating in the relocation of the Gazebo to Lawndale Avenue and the Old Oak Ridge Road location to its new site on 7 acres of land in New Garden Village.
New Garden now employs more than 200 people and provides products and services to residential, commercial and retail customers in Guilford , Rockingham, Alamance, Davidson, Forsyth, and Davie Counties .
New Garden is celebrating 33 years of service this year.
There has been a lot of growth and change since the early years, but certain core principles have remained the same: New Garden’s ongoing commitment to be a responsible corporate citizen and, most importantly, to completely satisfy the customer’s needs. Inspired by Jim’s passion for plants and people and a belief in personal integrity, we have been pleased and honored to see our family business grow in new and exciting directions.
