March

A few smart steps now can prevent weeds, reduce plant stress, and set up beds and lawns for a healthier season.

Spring cleanup and bed prep

  • Cut back perennials and ornamental grasses you left for winter interest. Leave a little stubble to protect new shoots.
  • Aggressively pull remaining winter weeds; proactive removal now is crucial for an easier spring.
  • Spot-check and refresh mulch. Remember to keep it away from plant crowns to prevent rot.
  • Edge beds and define borders. It’s one of the quickest ways to make the landscape look “awake.”

Pruning and plant health

  • Finish dormant pruning on trees and summer-flowering shrubs before new growth speeds up.
  • Only prune spring-flowering shrubs after they bloom.
  • Watch for early signs of disease on stressed plants and remove any clearly dead or damaged material.

Lawn care

Tall fescue

  • Avoid heavy spring fertilizing. Too much nitrogen now can push top growth before roots are ready.
  • Spot-treat broadleaf weeds as needed, especially in thinner areas. Don’t spray on windy days.
  • Begin mowing as growth returns, keeping blades sharp and height appropriate.

Bermuda

  • Bermuda will be slow to green up, but weed control decisions should be made now.
  • If crabgrass has been a problem, pre-emergent timing is critical in early spring. Don’t wait until you see it, apply before dogwoods bloom.

Planting and seasonal color

  • March is a great month for planting trees, shrubs, and hardy perennials while temperatures are mild.
  • Replace winter losses and fill gaps in foundation beds and entry areas.
  • If you want spring color at the front door or patio, plan plantings that will transition well into summer rather than a one-week splash.

Irrigation and water management

  • If you have an irrigation system, March is the time to schedule spring activation and repairs so you’re ready when warm weather hits.
  • Check downspouts, drains, and low spots after heavy rains. Fixing drainage now protects new plantings later.

Hardscape and outdoor lighting

  • Power wash patios, walkways, and steps if needed, then re-sand joints where appropriate.
  • Reset any shifted pavers and address trip hazards early.
  • Activate and check the lighting system: replace failed lamps, clean lenses, and adjust alignment before plants fill out.

Get ahead of the season

  • Make a short list of what you want to improve this year: screening, privacy, pollinator planting, drainage fixes, lighting, or a refreshed entry bed.
  • If you’re considering design or installation work, March is when schedules start filling fast. Getting in early makes spring projects easier to time.
